The leaders of BNP have alleged that the departmental public space program of BNP in Faridpur was marred by the attack of Jubo League and Chhatra League. In addition to vandalizing the stage in the attack, they also said that more than half a hundred workers of BNP were injured.
Like other divisional cities of the country, BNP's Faridpur divisional mass location program started at Ambika Maidan in the city on Wednesday around 11:00 am. Rajbari, Shariatpur, Gopalganj, Madaripur and other local leaders gathered in the program with a procession.
BNP Central Vice Chairman Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, Advisor to BNP Chairperson Zahirul Haque Shahzada Mia, former MP Shah Md participated in the program. Local leaders including Abu Zafar, General Secretary of Krishak Dal Central Committee Shahidul Islam Babul, Faridpur Divisional Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid Islam, District BNP convener Syed Modasser Ali Icha, Member Secretary AKM Kibria Swapan.
Eyewitnesses said that while the local leaders and activists were speaking, the leaders and activists of Jubo League and Chhatra League raised slogans in front of the Shaheed Sufi Club adjacent to the place of the public space program around 12:30 noon. At one point, they ambushed the BNP activists with sticks. BNP leaders and activists came forward to prevent Jubo League-Chhatra League attacks. At this time, brick throwing and chasing started between both parties.
At this time several cocktails exploded. Some time after the clash between the two sides, a large number of police reached the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. Later, police fired tearshells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. Due to the back and forth of both parties, BNP's scheduled departmental mass location program has come to naught.
It has been claimed by BNP that more than half a hundred BNP leaders and activists were injured in this incident. The central and local leaders of BNP were forced to move to safer places due to the attack and vandalism.
BNP Central Vice Chairman Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan blamed the Jubo League and Chhatra League for the attack on t public space programme.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Suman Ranjan Sarkar said several rounds of tear shells and 16 rounds of rubber bullets were fired to bring the situation under control. 4 members of the police were injured in the attack. 10 activists of BNP were arrested from the spot.
